Community Support Groups

Nevada County Pride Support Groups to be Paused in September

After thoughtful discussion and careful consideration, Nevada County Pride has decided to temporarily discontinue its volunteer-led support groups, effective September 2025. As you may recall, these groups were restarted in spring 2024 after being shut down when the PFLAG chapter closed.
Participation in the groups, designed to offer community, conversation, and mutual support, has steadily declined in recent months. Attendance has been minimal or, at times, nonexistent. Some view this as a positive sign that community networks are strong enough without formal support groups. We want to take this "pause" to reassess how these groups can better serve the community.

The key volunteers have agreed that it’s time to bring this chapter of programming to a close and determine whether there are needs these groups are not meeting that can be addressed in the future. Nevada County Pride deeply appreciates the dedication of those who have volunteered their time and energy to create a welcoming space for others, and to John Paul for leading this program.
While the support groups will no longer be offered, Nevada County Pride remains committed to fostering connection, resilience, and advocacy within the LGBTQ+ community. Other events and programs will continue throughout the year, and we welcome your participation and ideas.

Rainbow Social, started in 2016, to ensure that LGBTQIA+ youth feel safe and welcome in the NEO Youth Center. This group is for youth and young adults ages 11-18. The group meets on the first Thursday of each month during the school year (no meetings June-August) at Bright Futures for Youth. This support group actively reaches out to the LGBTQIA+ youth community to let them know they are seen and loved. The get-together is a mix of fun social activities that promote protective factors to increase their health and well-being and help youth build friendships and self-esteem, as well as spending time with caring adults who listen without judgment. THANKS so much to this panel of three young people, Sam (they/them), Maddux (they/he), Stephen (he/him), and Nevada County Pride board member and moderator, Megan Wells (they/she), who shared their stories and discussed the challenges that young LGBTQ+ community members face here regarding identity, community, and acceptance, as well as ways we can support the LGBTQ+ community. It was insightful, powerful and fun! Download to your favorite device for your next walk, run, bike or drive.

Speakers Bureau

Can you join our NC Pride Speakers Bureau?

In the past we have had a somewhat ad hoc approach to finding community speakers and panelists for events, school classes, non-profits, businesses, faith groups, and more. We often call on those who have been reliable volunteers in the past. We frequently turn down requests because we can’t find anyone. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to Educate.

To be better prepared for future speaking opportunities – that do so much to raise awareness and visibility for our community – we have created a Speakers Bureau to have a ready pool of volunteers we can quickly call on to help us. We are assembling a diverse group of volunteers, representing all that we are in the LGBTQ+ Rainbow, to be able to ensure representation: from youth to elders, gay parents, allies, and more. Speakers are mostly needed to share your personal story, answer questions from your own life experience, be an advocate for our community and how we can continue to gain acceptance and support. We can help you get comfortable with doing this if you need it.

Can you help us out? Please complete our volunteer form and check the drop down box for “Speakers Bureau”.

Are you looking for a speaker for your organization?

Are you part of a local business or organization who would like to have an LGBTQ+ speaker or panel? Our beautiful Nevada County is home to a diverse community of LGBTQ+ members. From Alta Sierra to Truckee, we number from 5 to 7% in our county of 100,000 people.  We range in age from youth to senior citizens. We are parents, children, siblings, and friends.  To many  of you, our community is mostly invisible. But no doubt you have met us - in organizations you are involved in, restaurants or coffee shops, schools, stores that you shop at and other places. Some of you may have never had an opportunity to get to know our community better. The purpose of our speakers bureau is to do that for you. Community members from Nevada County Pride’s Speakers Bureau are available to speak on topics of interest to your group and to answer all your questions in an informal setting. Prior topics include: growing up gay in Nevada County, why and how to use pronouns and how to be an ally, among other topics.
