October Board Letter

Dear Community,

When I think about Pride, I think about belonging.

I have the privilege of serving our community in two roles that might seem very different at first: as a minister and as Treasurer of Nevada County Pride. But for me, a transgender man they are deeply connected. Both are ultimately about people. Both are about creating spaces where individuals can experience dignity, connection, authenticity, and belonging.

Living in a rural community makes that work especially meaningful. LGBTQAI+ people are everywhere—in our schools, businesses, congregations, neighborhoods, families, and workplaces. Sometimes, though, finding one another and finding places where we can be the truest expression of ourselves and not only be accepted but be CELEBRATED is incredibly affirming and healing for our community.

Nevada County Pride helps make those places possible. Your support in donating your time to help table at events, attending our activities, donations of supplies and financial donations all keep Nevada County Pride going to provide these events and spaces.

I have experienced firsthand what happens when we intentionally create community. A stranger becomes a familiar face. A familiar face becomes a friend. Someone who once wondered whether they belonged discovers that they are not alone. And slowly, a collection of individuals becomes a community that looks out for one another.

That is why I support Nevada County Pride and I invite you to join us either as a volunteer or board member.

As Treasurer, part of my responsibility happens quietly behind the scenes—helping steward the resources entrusted to Nevada County Pride so that this organization can continue creating programs, events, connections, and opportunities for our LGBTQAI+ community. There are not paid positions on the Nevada County Pride beyond a couple contractors to support accounting and tax filing. It is all volunteer run which means your donations go a long way to serve our community.

Whether you have lived in Nevada County your entire life or arrived last month, whether you are out and proud, still discovering who you are, an ally, a parent, a young person, an elder, or someone simply searching for community—there is a place for you here.

My hope is that we continue building a Nevada County where LGBTQAI+ people don’t merely find acceptance, but experience genuine belonging.

Because sometimes the most powerful message we can offer another human being is remarkably simple:

You are seen. You matter. And there is a place for you here.
