Choosing to Lean in

Lately, I’ve struggled to show up. I’ve found myself saying, “I’m at capacity” over and over and choosing to rest and hole up at home rather than attend events or reach out to friends. While it's true that life has kept me focused on the non-negotiables - preparing for graduate school, caring for family, working, watching the world around us become more and more unloving and untenable day by day - I also recognize that this is precisely the time when I need my community - connection, joy, and play with others - the most.

I got a great taste of community last weekend at the memorial service for our friend and fellow NCP board member, Drew Rust. One of my favorite parts of Drew was his style - any event was a chance to look fabulous. I honored Drew by donning a colorful outfit and cowboy boots (I know he would've approved) and headed to the Seamen Lodge to help set up. As the event kicked off, I watched the room fill with dozens and dozens of friends, family, and community members from across Drew’s life. I was blown away by the visible web of bonds and outpouring of love that filled the space. Drew was a true community builder, and many people in the room remembered being welcomed to the queer community in Nevada County by his warm and inclusive spirit.

So, I’m challenging myself to step into my ‘Drew-ness’ this Pride season. I’m leaning in, I’m going out, and I’m choosing participation over apathy. I’m saying yes to the conversations, connections, and events that may fill my calendar but will also, inevitably, fill my cup. I’m going to take as many opportunities as I can to look fabulous and to play alongside the evolving, dynamic queer community that is one of the true gems of Nevada County.

If you, like me, have struggled to lean into joy in these unprecedented times, I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events. Show me your sparkle, let me cheer you on and together, let’s fill our cups with the joy and authenticity that we know we need now more than ever.

See you out there friends,

Megan
